Marine equipment and solutions for ammonia as fuel
Advancing towards an ammonia-fuelled future
As the shipping sector navigates the path to decarbonization, driven by stringent regulations and ambitious targets, renewable ammonia is emerging as a compelling alternative fuel for achieving net zero emissions. With a century of experience in marine fuels and a proven track record in handling similar fuels like LNG and LPG, Alfa Laval is at the forefront of developing solutions for ammonia-powered vessels and is ready to partner with you in making the transition. Through continuous research, development and collaboration, we ensure a safe and efficient transition to this promising energy source.

Our products
FCM Ammonia
FCM Ammonia is an innovative and complete solution designed for the safe and efficient use of ammonia as marine fuel. It includes fuel supply system, ammonia release mitigation system and fuel valves train. Alfa Laval’s expertise in handling diverse fuels like methanol and LPG has been key in the development, and full-scale testing started in Winterthur end of 2024 will secure full reliability for application onboard.
Aalborg marine boiler solutions
The Alfa Laval Aalborg ammonia dual-fuel boiler system can be a cost effective, multi-purpose system for ammonia capable ships, as the system can be used for meeting ship’s heat demands as well as fulfilling the requirements for reducing ammonia release to the atmosphere by incinerating ammonia vapor in the purge/vent stream and boil-off gas.
Heating and cooling
Alfa Laval offers the widest and most comprehensive heat transfer portfolio in the market. These heat exchangers, tailored to customer applications, deliver energy-efficient and reliable performance. They are fatigue resistant, and fully serviceable, and designed to meet the unique demands of working with ammonia.
Tank Management
Alfa Laval, through its brand Scanjet, delivers advanced tank cleaning technology for marine vessels. Scanjet offers a comprehensive portfolio of tank management systems and solutions, ranging from the design and production process to maintenance and global after-sales service for customers.
Alfa Laval enabling a safe ammonia-fuelled future with its innovative solutions
As the shipping industry transitions to cleaner fuels, ammonia as marine fuel is gaining momentum. Alfa Laval is at the forefront of enabling this shift. Through research, product development, and strategic partnerships, the company is building the expertise and solutions needed for a safe and efficient transition to alternative fuels.

Alfa Laval, WinGD, ABS and K Shipbuilding join forces for ammonia-fuelled tanker design
Alfa Laval collaborates with WinGD, ABS and K Shipbuilding in the development of an ammonia-fuelled MR tanker design under a memorandum of understanding. Alfa Laval will deliver the detailed documentation for the final fuel gas system design for ammonia.

WinGD partners with Alfa Laval to advance the development of ammonia-powered engines
Alfa Laval and Swiss engine designer WinGD have established a partnership in which Alfa Laval will deliver two fuel supply systems (FSS) for testing WinGD’s ammonia-fuelled engine in early 2024. The partnership is a significant step forward in the development of ammonia as a future fuel for marine vessels.

Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre receives approval for testing with ammonia
Authorities have granted approval for testing with ammonia at the Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre. When installation of the testing setup is completed by the end of 2022, the centre will be able to work with all fuels in consideration as the marine industry decarbonizes.

Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre
In 2022, Alfa Laval got approval for testing ammonia at the Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre in Aalborg. As with LNG, biofuels and methanol, the centre has deepened its knowledge of ammonia combustion to help in the development of onboard technologies, keeping safety and efficiency in mind. This unique R&D facility, which has a 2800 m2 testing space, has made significant progress in developing technology for using ammonia as fuel, in close collaboration with key industry stakeholders.
